A true story……………
shaam ke saadhe teen baje ka samay tha. garmee ka mausam hone ke baavajood ghar ke andar ek ajeeb-see thandak pasaree huee thee. deevaar par latakee ghadee kee tik-tik kamare kee khaamoshee ko aur bhee bhaaree bana rahee thee. tabhee achaanak phon kee ghantee bajee. raadhika, jo ghar ke kaamon mein vyast thee, ne phon uthaaya aur dheere se kaha,
Hello, kaun bol raha hai?
doosaree taraph se ek kamajor aur kaampatee huee aavaaz aaee,
“beta, main mohanalaal hoon… tumhaare baaboojee. tumhaaree maan bahut beemaar hain. bijalee ka bil nahin bhara gaya hai, ghar mein andhera hai. shaayad tum bil bharana bhool gaee ho.”
raadhika kuchh pal ke lie chup rah gaee. vah aavaaz itanee kamajor thee ki use sunane aur samajhane mein kathinaee ho rahee thee. usane dheere se kaha,
“aap kaun hain? lagata hai aapane galat nambar daayal kar liya hai.”
mohanalaal kee aavaaz phir aaee,
“beta, mera beta hamesha mujhe phon karata tha. mujhe usaka nambar yaad nahin. mainne phon daayarektaree se ek nambar uthaaya aur galatee se tumhen kol kar diya.”
us aavaaz mein kuchh aisa tha jisane raadhika ko jhakajhor diya. usane socha ki shaayad yah koee mazaak ho, lekin phir bhee, usane poochh liya, “baaboojee, aapaka pata kya hai? main embulens bula rahee hoon.” mohanalaal ne dheere-dheere apana pata bataaya. raadhika ne turant embulens bulaee aur vahaan jaane ka nirnay liya. mohanalaal aur unakee patnee susheela pichhale kaee varshon se akele rah rahe the. unaka ikalauta beta vineet, shahar mein naukaree karata tha. vyastata ke kaaran vah maheenon apane maata-pita se milane nahin aata tha. pahale vah har maheene paise bhejata tha, lekin pichhale kuchh samay se vah bhee band ho gaya tha. susheela kee sehat kharaab hotee ja rahee thee. ghar mein raashan khatm ho chuka tha. bijalee ka bil na bharane ke kaaran ghar mein andhera tha. mohanalaal har din apane bete ke phon ka intajaar karate the, lekin ab vah intajaar vyarth lagane laga tha. raadhika jab die gae pate par pahunchee, to jo usane dekha, usane usake hosh uda die. ghar ke andar mohanalaal aur susheela kee laashen padee theen. susheela sophe par besudh padee theen, aur mohanalaal pharsh par, haath mein ek puraanee phon daayarektaree pakade hue. raadhika ko yakeen nahin ho raha tha. kuchh ghante pahale hee usane mohanalaal se baat kee thee. doktar aur pulis vahaan pahunch gae. doktar ne bataaya ki bujurg dampatti kee maut chaar-paanch ghante pahale ho chukee thee. raadhika ke aankhon mein aansoo the. usane pulis adhikaaree se kaha, ..”yah kaise ho sakata hai? mainne unase thodee der pahale baat kee thee.” pulis adhikaaree ne raadhika se poochha,
“kya aap inhen jaanatee hain?”.. raadhika ne kaha, “nahin, lekin unhonne galatee se mujhe phon kiya aur madad maangee.”** pulis ne jab vineet se sampark kiya, to usane kaha, **”main bahut vyast hoon. antim sanskaar ke lie nahin aa paoonga.”
yah sunakar raadhika dang rah gaee. usane vineet se kaha, **”main tumhen ek tasveer bhej rahee hoon. yah tumhaare maata-pita kee aakhiree sthiti hai. ise dekh lo aur yaad rakho, yah tasveer tumhaare bhavishy kee bhee ho sakatee hai.”** vineet ne raadhika kee baat ko gambheerata se nahin liya aur phon kaat diya. raadhika ne mohanalaal aur susheela ka antim sanskaar karaaya. unakee yaad mein usane ek chhota sa smaarak banavaaya aur yah sunishchit kiya ki unaka ant sammaanajanak tareeke se ho. usane apane dil mein ek sankalp liya ki vah apanee jindagee ka ek hissa bujurgon kee seva ke lie samarpit karegee. usane apane aas-paas ke logon se bhee yah baat saajha kee, taaki ve apane maata-pita kee dekhabhaal mein kabhee kotaahee na karen. raadhika ne mahasoos kiya ki hamaare maata-pita hamaaree paravarish mein apana poora jeevan laga dete hain, aur unaka sahaara banana hamaara sabase bada kartavy hai. agar ham unhen anadekha karenge, to ek din hamen apane nirnay par pachhataava karana padega. yah kahaanee ek mahatvapoorn sandesh detee hai— **apane maata-pita kee dekhabhaal ko apanee praathamikata banaie. unakee bhaavanaon aur jarooraton ko samajhie, kyonki unakee jagah koee aur nahin le sakata.**
In English language translation:-
It was three thirty in the evening. Despite it being summer, there was a strange coolness inside the house. The ticking of the clock hanging on the wall was making the silence of the room even heavier. Then suddenly the phone rang. Radhika, who was busy with household chores, picked up the phone and said softly, **”Hello, who is speaking?”**
A weak and trembling voice came from the other side, **”Son, I am Mohanlal… your father. Your mother is very ill. The electricity bill has not been paid, there is darkness in the house. Maybe you have forgotten to pay the bill.”**
Radhika remained silent for a few moments. That voice was so weak that she was having difficulty in hearing and understanding it. He said softly, **”Who are you? You seem to have dialled the wrong number.”**
Mohanlal’s voice came again, **”Son, my son used to call me all the time. I don’t remember his number. I picked up a number from the phone directory and called you by mistake.”**
There was something in that voice that shocked Radhika. She thought it might be a joke, but still, she asked, **”Babuji, what is your address? I am calling an ambulance.”**
Mohanlal slowly told his address. Radhika immediately called an ambulance and decided to go there.
Mohanlal and his wife Sushila had been living alone for the past several years. Their only son, Vinit, had a job in the city. Due to his busy schedule, he would not visit his parents for months. Earlier, he used to send money every month, but for some time, that too had stopped.
Sushila’s health was deteriorating. The ration in the house had finished. The house was dark because the electricity bill was not paid. Mohanlal used to wait for his son’s call every day, but now that wait seemed futile.
When Radhika reached the given address, what she saw shocked her. Inside the house were the bodies of Mohanlal and Sushila. Sushila was lying unconscious on the sofa, and Mohanlal was lying on the floor, holding an old phone directory in his hand.
Radhika could not believe it. She had spoken to Mohanlal just a few hours ago.
The doctor and the police reached there. The doctor said that the elderly couple had died four-five hours ago.
Radhika had tears in her eyes. She told the police officer, **”How is this possible? I spoke to them a while ago.”**
The police officer asked Radhika, **”Do you know them?”**
Radhika said, **”No, but they called me by mistake and asked for help.”**
When the police contacted Vinit, he said, **”I am very busy. I won’t be able to come for the funeral.”**
Radhika was stunned to hear this. She told Vinit, **”I am sending you a picture. This is the last position of your parents. Look at it and remember, this picture can be of your future too.”**
Vineet did not take Radhika’s words seriously and disconnected the call.
Radhika performed the last rites of Mohanlal and Susheela. She built a small memorial in their memory and ensured that they had a respectable end.
She made a resolution in her heart that she will dedicate a part of her life to serving the elderly. She also shared this with people around her so that they never neglect to take care of their parents.
Radhika realized that our parents spend their whole life in our upbringing, and it is our biggest duty to support them. If we ignore them, one day we will have to regret our decision.
This story gives an important message— **Make taking care of your parents your priority. Understand their feelings and needs, because no one can replace them.**
Take care your family 💕…🙏
